Units of the Central Coast Guard foiled 30 illegal sea crossings and intercepted and rescued 709 people from sub-Saharan countries, the directorate general of the National Guard said in a statement on Tuesday.
The units of the Sfax region of the National Guard also arrested 5 people among smugglers and middlemen who were being searched in preventive operations. They also confiscated 17 metal boats and 17 outboard motors, as well as two vehicles used to transport the «crossers.»
The National Guard reported that the Public Prosecutor’s Office had authorised the necessary legal measures to be taken.
