Djerba-Zarzis tops national ranking in tourist overnight stays

The Djerba-Zarzis tourist destination (Governorate of Medenine) is booming this season, with an average occupancy rate in the region’s hotels of around 80%, up to 100% in some hotel units, regional commissioner for tourism in Medenine Hichem Mahouachi told TAP on Saturday.

The region topped the national rankings in terms of overnight stays during the first half of 2023, recording 2 million 300 thousand overnight stays, or 29% of total overnight stays at the national level, an increase of 45% compared to the same period last year, the official specified.

The number of visitors rose by 25% compared with H1 of 2022, with the Djerba-Zarzis tourist region welcoming 440,000 tourists during the same period, bringing it close to the results for 2019, the benchmark year for the tourism sector, he pointed out.

The French market represents the most important market for this destination, with a number of arrivals amounting to 118 thousand tourists, followed by the local domestic market with 92 thousand visitors, the Libyan market with 91 thousand tourists, then the German market with 38 thousand arrivals, in addition to the Czech and Polish markets, the same source said.
