The energy balance deficit accounted for 54% of the trade deficit at the end of September 2023. The latter hovered around TND 14 billion, despite a decline on an annual basis. Excluding energy, Tunisia’s trade balance deficit shrank to TND 6372.2 million, the National Institute of Statistics (French: INS) said in its September Foreign Trade at Current Prices report. The energy balance deficit amounted to TND 7607.1 million (54% of the total deficit) compared with TND 7042.3 million during the first nine months of 2022. Tunisia’s energy balance deficit soared 5% by late June 2023, reaching TND 4.2 billion against TND 4 billion during the same period in 2022, the National Energy and Mining Observatory said. Tunisia reported a 10% primary energy balance deficit by late June (2.08 million tonnes of oil equivalent) compared to 2022 due to a lower domestic crude oil and natural gas production.
