The first round of the local council elections will be held on December 24, President Kais Saied said.

Chairing a Cabinet Meeting, on Thursday, the Head of State pointed out that a writ inviting voters for the first round of local elections will be issued soon.

The second round will be held after the annoucement of the final results of the first round, he added.

The choice of date for the local elections is not fortuitous. It is a choice made to pay tribute to Mohamed LaSmari and Chawki Hidri, who had fallen as martyrs on December 24, 2010, in Menzel Bouzayène in the governorate of Sidi Bouzid during the protest movement during the Tunisian Revolution, Saied underlined.

In another connection, the President warmly welcomed the “exploits and remarkable achievements” of the army and security forces in dealing with the “inhumane” phenomenon of irregular migration, pointing out that Tunisia has treated migrants in compliance with the law and in accordance with moral and ethical values.

After recalling Tunisia’s success in dismantling and tracking down a large number of criminal networks involved in human and organ trafficking, the President of the Republic urged the various stakeholders to redouble efforts to tackle the origins and real causes that have led to the rise of this phenomenon.

He also underlined that efforts to enforce the law in the country are continuing unabated, recalling that the State is basically founded on the idea of the rule of law.

“We are doing our utmost to enshrine the idea of a society governed by the rule of law, in which every citizen makes the law his own and willingly abides by it.”

Referring to the outpouring of solidarity shown by Tunisians for the upkeep of educational establishments, President Saïed commended the intensive security campaigns aimed at making the school environment secure and “putting an end to the phenomenon of the spread of narcotics,” warning in this regard against “incessant attempts to undermine the State and destroy the society.”

In the same vein, the President of the Republic urged Tunisians to carry out a two-speed purge of the country. “Purge of an environment that is degrading and purge of an administration that is crumbling under fictitious and unjustified recruitment based on fraud and clientelism.”

He voiced thanks in this regard, to the departments of Equipment and Housing, the Interior Affairs, the Office of Topography and Cadastre, the Independent Higher Authority for the Elections (ISIE), the governors and the armed forces for their invaluable contribution to the delimitation of the territorial boundaries of the imadas, “a first of its kind in Tunisia’s modern history.”

This territorial delimitation, a key stage in the electoral process, will be retained and approved during the local, regional and district council elections, the Head of State assured.
