FM meets with SG of UNCTAD in Geneva [Upd 1]

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad Nabil Ammar Wednesday met, as part of a working visit to Geneva, Switzerland, with Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

Ammar welcomed strides in cooperation since his March 2023 visit, mainly as regards a three-year training programme on competitiveness policies for Arab and African countries members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) which Tunisia will be hosting in 2024. This in addition to the launch of the Tunisian Investment Policy Review (IPR) programme and progress made in implementing the action plan of electronic commerce in Tunisia under eT-Ready.

There is need to keep coodinating efforts to deliver successful results, the FM further said.

Nabil Ammar “requested the technical assistance of UNCTAD for the development and implementation of a National Strategy on e-Commerce,” reads a ministry press release.

?The minister also highlighted “Tunisia’s intensive
efforts to recover” the stolen assets of the Tunisian people and said there is intention to organise a high-level event on appropriate international responses to support countries fighting for the repcovery of their looted funds.

In another connection, the Minister laid emphasis on efforts made by UNCTAD to assist the Palestinian people and highlighted the serious humanitarian and economic crisis in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories.

There is need for mobilisation of the international community, he said, to put an end to the suffering of the Palestinian people.

Rebeca Grynspan, reiterated the organisation’s commitment to further support Tunisia in achieving its 2023-2025 development plan and Tunisia’s Vision 2035 by making its expertise, training programmes and technical assistance available.

She also invited Tunisia, as a traditional partner of UNCTAD, to attend events scheduled to mark the 60th anniversary of UNCTAD (June 2024).

The official also welcomed an invitation to visit Tunisia.
