Kenya: Tender launched for off-grid solar power plants

Kenya’s national energy company, Keny Power, has launched a tender for solar microgrids to be located in Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Tana River, Lamu, Narok, Kilifi and Kwale.

Kenyan energy company Kenya Power and Lighting Company Plc has launched a tender for the deployment of off-grid solar power plants in remote areas.

The solar microgrids will be located in Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Tana River, Lamu, Narok, Kilifi and Kwale.

Kenya Power has stated that the selected developers will be required to build the facilities and provide operation and maintenance services for 7 years. The total budget for the tender is 133.8 million euros ($145.6 million).

Interested companies will have until September 26 to submit their bids.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Kenya’s total installed solar capacity stood at 307 MW at the end of 2022. Around 90 MW of photovoltaic power was deployed last year.
