“We will remain faithful to martyrs who laid down their lives for the sake of Tunisia’s freedom and sovereignty and the independence of its people-inspired decision,” said President Kais Saïed as he chaired Sunday a ceremony to commemorate Martyrs’ Day.

“Martyrs on April 9,1938, did not hesitate to face up to colonial forces and claim a Tunisian parliament,” he further said. He expressed, in this vein, “the hope the much-dreamed-of parliament back in 1938 will be the one which will respond to the aspirations of Tunisians today and tomorrow.”

The commemoration ceremony of this 85th anniversary at the Martyrs Square in Séjoumi, Tunis, was attended by Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives Ibrahim Bouderbala, Premier Najla Bouden, the Minister of Defence and members of the Supreme Council of Armies.

The Head of State laid a wreath at the foot of the memorial and recited the Fatiha in the memory of martyrs before saluting the flag as the national anthem was performed. Three salvos of artillery were fired.

Tunisia is commemorating Sunday April 9, 1938 events – a turning point in the history of the national struggle for independence. They took place in Tunis following protests to demand political reforms, mainly the establishment of a parliament.
