Some 75 suicide and attempted suicide cases reported in 1st six months of 2024

Tunis: 18% of the 75 suicide and attempted suicide cases reported in the 1st six months of 2024 involved children.

The suicide and attempted suicide cases were split between 60 men and 13 women, according to the latest report by the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES). 47% of them were among young people.

The governorate of Kairouan is still in the lead in terms of suicide and attempted suicides, with about 15% of cases reported in the first half of this year, followed by the governorates of Bizerte, Gabes and Kasserine.

With regard to indicators of violence, the report points to an increase in cases of violence against women. Murder and attempted murder were the most frequent types of violence in June, with the governorate of Ben Arous recording the highest number of cases.

The report indicates that the majority of perpetrators of violence were men (55%), while mixed violence accounted for 20% of cases,
and in 25% of cases the aggressor was a woman.

The report mentions that at the beginning of June, a woman was killed in the governorate of Kairouan, and at the end of the month, a husband set fire to his wife in the governorate of Gafsa. On the same day, another man ran over his ex-wife and her mother with a car.

June was also marked by death threats, robberies, sexual assaults, rapes of women and children, as well as assaults in public and private spaces, with the street the main scene of violence.
