The Tawhida Ben Cheikh group is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the legalisation of abortion in Tunisia with a press conference entitled “Defending our gains! Guarantee women their sexual and reproductive rights and bodily autonomy.’

In a press release issued on Monday, the Tawhida Ben Cheikh group, which includes feminist organisations, said that the event, scheduled for Thursday, September 28, 2023 in Tunis, would be an opportunity to take stock of the current situation and mobilise public opinion to increase vigilance regarding freedom of choice and bodily autonomy.

The aim is also to work on improving legislation and ensuring that what is already guaranteed by law is put into practice.

The same source believes that the sexual and reproductive health situation is deteriorating, based on the testimonies of some women and official statistics that show a lack of contraceptive and abortion services.

According to the Tawhida Ben Cheikh group, this situation deprives some women of the right to abortion in accordance with the law in force, namely Article 214 of the Penal Code of September 26, 1973.
