Tunisia: 9.8 billion dinars saved in 12 years thanks to energy management programmes

General

Energy savings estimated at o 10.7 million tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE), worth 9.8 billion dinars intended for the importation of fossil energy, have been recorded through various energy management projects and programmes implemented in Tunisia from 2010 to 2022, Director-General of the National Agency for Energy Management (ANME) Fethi Hanchi said Thursday.

Presenting the results of the energy management programmes and indicators recorded during this period at an information day, Hanchi described these results as “good” since they led to a 12% decrease in primary energy demand in 2022 compared to 2010.

“These results were accomplished thanks to the efforts of ANME and the Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas (STEG),” he added, noting that STEG’s contribution is estimated at 40% through the use of efficient equipment for electricity production, distribution, and transportation.

The contribution of audit programmes and other energy management programmes is also estimated at 40%, while the implementation of renewable energy (RE) technologies such as solar water heaters and electricity generation from RE sources contributed 20% to the achieved savings.
