The National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT), Friday, said that it had suspended its partnership with the Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE), as a protest against the body’s transformation into “a tool of exercising pressure on freedom of the press in Tunisia.»

For the journalists’ union, “the ISIE has turned into a censorship body restricting freedom of the press and journalistic content, which goes against its prerogatives, the provisions of the Constitution and international standards of the freedom of the press and freedom of expression.”

«The ISIE issued a warning against “Nawat” website over the publication of a news article accusing it of posting fake news on the failure of the elections and linking the case of the conspiracy against State security to the legislative elections» reads a statement of the SNJT on Friday.

The SNJT added that «this warning was issued as part of mounting pressure exerted by the ISIE on journalists and media outlets in an attempt to impose censorship on
the sector and silence every free voice that raises debate on public issues.»

The SNJT expressed support with the journalists of «Nawat» website, urging the ISIE to stop its harassment and unjustified interference in media content.
