Weber calls on European countries to support Tunisia in IMF talks

European MPs are keen to keep on providing necessary support to Tunisia so as to tackle economic and social challenges, said President of the Parliamentary Group of the European People’s Party in the European Parliament Manfred Weber. This was as he met Wendesday in Bardo with Speaker of the Assembly of People’s Representatives (French: ARP) Brahim Bouderbala. Weber urged European countries to step up investment programmes in Tunisia and support it in its talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The European official said he takes interest in the country’s political reform process and enquired about the ARP’s role and priorities. He laid emphasis on the interest which the European Parliament lends to relations with Tunisia. Joint action and cooperation between the two parliamentary institutions are of paramount importance, he was quoted as saying in an ARP press release. For his part, Bouderbala highlighted the key role of MPs in boosting cooperation and fostering closer ties. He also shed light on the solid relations binding the ARP and the European Parliament and the shared will to further consolidate them. The Speaker also provided an overview of political developments since the Revolution and related fallouts. This state of affairs required the setting in motion on July 25 of a political reform process on the basis of a roadmap. A new constitution was adopted and transparent elections were held.
