Kisumu: Kisumu Central Member of Parliament (MP) Dr. Joshua Oron has successfully facilitated the issuance of driving licenses to 400 youth from his constituency.
According to Kenya News Agency, the initiative is part of a broader strategy to equip the youth with practical skills, thereby opening up diverse employment opportunities for them. The cohort is part of the beneficiaries of a Sh8 million scholarship program dedicated to the driving school initiative, aimed at empowering local youth.
The program, implemented in partnership with three driving schools within the constituency, saw the beneficiaries receive training in driving skills to better equip them for various job opportunities in the transportation sector. Speaking during the graduation ceremony held at his offices in Kisumu, Oron outlined the importance of the initiative in addressing gaps in the transportation sector, adding that the beneficiaries were well equipped to take up opportunities in the sector anywhere in the country, and around the world.
'This is an annual event to upskill our residents and prepare them for employment. It is our second edition, following last year's training of 450 participants. We are also supporting experienced drivers who previously lacked licenses, ensuring they meet legal requirements,' he said.
Beyond the driving program, Oron outlined significant educational projects including the construction of two secondary schools in Kanyakwar and Market Milimani. The Market Milimani project, which is a girls' day secondary school, will enhance access to education for girl child in the area. Additionally, 10 science laboratories have been built, with five fully equipped this year. Kosawo Secondary School, a major education project, is expected to be completed by early next year, providing five streams per class.
The legislator further rooted support for the cooperation between ODM leader Raila Odinga and President William Ruto, stating that move was set to fast-track development in the Nyanza region. 'For the first time, we've seen ODM members chairing critical committees like Budget and Health. We are in this government to stay, working with President Ruto until 2027 and beyond,' he said.
