Mombasa: The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) has urged the government to prioritize the needs of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) by increasing their funding allocation and support programs to promote inclusivity and equal opportunities. Speaking in Mombasa County during celebrations to mark International Day of Disabled Persons, Rev. Ezekiel Mogere emphasized the urgent need to support the disabled through various projects, employment, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). He noted that such initiatives would help PWDs cater to their basic needs and reduce their dependence on street begging.
According to Kenya News Agency, the national government allocates at least Sh700 million annually to PWDs. Rev. Mogere expressed hope that this funding would benefit the disabled community in multiple aspects, ensuring they enjoy the same rights as every other Kenyan. The event organized by ACK attracted approximately 50 people with disabilities, who gathered to commemorate the day and received an assortment of food s
upplies to take home.
Chairman of the Special Needs Alliance of Kenya in Mombasa County, Peter Mwanagina, praised ACK for celebrating this day with PWDs. He also called on the government to use this occasion to highlight the achievements made by PWDs over the year. Mwanagina stressed the importance of recognizing the progress PWDs have made in overcoming poverty, as it would inspire hope and motivation within the community.
Additionally, the group voiced concerns over the new health insurance model, SHA, which they claim has created complications for PWDs in accessing healthcare. They urged the government to address these issues, pointing out that they are still required to pay Sh7,500 annually for health services.
International Day of Persons with Disabilities aims to promote understanding of disability issues and garner support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities.
