Post: Africa Urban Forum Concludes Adopting Declaration

Addis Ababa: The Africa Urban Forum has concluded today with the adoption declaration.Addis Ababa hosted the inaugural Africa Urban Forum at Adwa Victory Memorial for three days, starting from 4th to 6th September, 2024.The three-day forum, held under the theme 'Sustainable Urbanization for Africa's Transformation: Agenda 2063,' brought together officials, city planners, policymakers, academics, and community leaders from across Africa and beyond.The declaration outlines a comprehensive framework aimed at enhancing urban planning, infrastructure development, and environmental sustainability in African cities.Speaking at the concluding event, Ethiopia's Minister of Urban and Infrastructure, Chaltu Sani said that the forum emphasized on the importance collaboration and collective action.'Our discussion reinforced that the success of our urban transformation efforts depends on active participation and commitment of all stakeholders, governments, partners, the private sector, among others, ' she said.Noting the forum was historic and successful, the minister stated that the Africa Urban Forum declaration would play significant role in transforming African cities.We have reaffirmed our commitment to sustainable and inclusive urban development, ensuring that our cities are not only center for economic growth but also beacon of social equality, she underscored.UN-Habitat Executive Director, Anacláudia Rossbach said on her part that the level of declaration, the meaning of declaration, the spirit of declaration and the energy demonstrate its power.UN Habitat is committed to support Africa cities, she said, adding "I leave Addis Ababa with clear sense and responsibility that was attributed to UN Habitat."Head of Governance and Human Rights Division at African Union, Issaka Garba Abdou extended gratitude to Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for hosting the first Africa Urban Forum and for extraordinary hospitality accorded to all participants.'Your commitment to sustainable urbanization is evident in the thoughtful policies and projects. Ethiopia continues to implement serving as shining example for the continent,' he said.This forum which focused on sustainable urbanization for African transformation Agenda 2063 has been remarkable success and this would have not been possible without the support and contribution of various stakeholders, he emphasized.Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa Jantirar Abay on his part said that the meaningful discussions, active engagement, and experience sharing by urban and country leaders and vibrant ideas gained from participants have culminated in the Africa Urban Forum Declaration."This declaration is not just a document; it is a testament to our collective commitment to shaping a brighter future for all Africans," he underscored.He also elaborated that the adoption of the declaration represents another significant step forward, not only for urban Africa but also for the continent as a whole.It acknowledges the interconnection between urban and rural areas, recogniz ing that the progress of our cities is closely linked to the well-being of our rural communities, he added.Source: Ethiopian News Agency
