At the 8th African Union-United Nations Annual Conference in Addis Ababa, António Guterres stressed the importance of cooperation between the two organizations to implement the Compact for the Future.

‘I have returned from the Future Summit with the knowledge that the conditions are now ripe for the international community to begin to deliver justice to the people of Africa,’ Mr. Guterres said.

The Secretary-General stressed that Africa faces enormous obstacles to its development that are deeply rooted in its colonial legacy. Most recently, the continent has had to deal with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, with many countries burdened by debt.

The UN Secretary-General also called for Security Council reforms and economic justice for Africa, calling for a stronger African voice in the international financial architecture.
