Tinderet: Alfred Cheruiyot and Janeth Chepng'etich showcased remarkable endurance and determination as they were crowned winners of the Barng'etuny Mountain Run held over the weekend in Tinderet. The event, which attracted over 2,000 elite and amateur athletes, covered challenging mountainous terrain, testing participants' stamina and resilience.
According to Kenya News Agency, Cheruiyot emerged winner in the men's 14km race, conquering the rugged terrain in an impressive 1:23:18. Ken Koros and Richard Atuya took the second and third positions respectively. In the women's category, Janeth Chepng'etich was crowned the winner after beating her closest rivals Mercy Chemutai and Miriam Chepkirui, who took the second and third positions respectively.
The overall winners took home cash prizes of Sh500,000 and a cow each, with the other winners sharing Sh4 million in different categories. The fourth edition of the Barng'etuny Mountain Run, which was organised in partnership with Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), Athletics Kenya, and the local leadership, drew hundreds of spectators, highlighting the region's potential as a hub for eco-tourism and sports.
Athletics Kenya President Jackson Tuwei stated that the run, which is part of the national mountain series, was critical in the identification and nurturing of talent as Kenya moves to regain its foothold in athletics. Two athletes who participated in the race, he added, have been selected to be part of the 16-member team that will represent Kenya in the World Mountain Championship to be held in Spain later this year. The success of this year's event, he said, cements its status as a premier competition in Kenya's athletics calendar, with plans already underway for an even bigger edition next year.
Speaking during the same occasion, Tourism Principal Secretary (PS) John Ololtuaa said KTB partnered in the national Mountain Run series to showcase the country's beautiful sceneries. As the government moves to shore up tourism numbers, he added, there was a need to develop other products to attract local and international tourists. 'This event is not just about nurturing talent, we are also showcasing our mountains and hills besides promoting conservation,' he said.
Sports Principal Secretary (PS) Eng. Peter Tum mentioned that the event was in line with the government's drive to nurture and monetize talent. Through the Talanta Hela initiative, he said athletes identified through the national mountain series shall be supported to develop their talents and earn a living from it.
