Kiambu: Boda boda riders across Kiambu County are celebrating Governor Kimani Wamatangi's initiative to construct operating shades, calling it a game-changer for their safety, dignity, and livelihoods. For years, riders have had to endure harsh weather conditions and unsafe roadside operations. Many stood in the scorching sun or braved heavy rains and further risked their lives owing to the many passing vehicles.
According to Kenya News Agency, the introduction of organized shades has brought a sense of order, safety, and relief to the thousands of youths who rely on the boda boda sector for their daily income. 'Before these shades, we would operate from road junctions and open spaces. It was very risky, and passengers often felt unsafe. Now we have a proper place to work from, and it has restored our dignity,' said Peter Kamau, a boda boda operator in Thika.
The shades are strategically located in busy towns and trading centers, offering not only shelter but also designated pick-up and drop-off points. Riders say this has reduced congestion and minimized the risk of accidents. Passengers, too, are benefiting from safer boarding areas, which has boosted their confidence in using boda bodas for daily transport.
Beyond safety, the riders are seeing an improvement in their earnings. With organized stops, customers easily find them, translating into more consistent business. 'This is not just about shelter from the rain. It's a business opportunity. Customers know where to find us, and that means more money for our families,' stated Kimani Waithaka, a rider in Limuru.
Many boda boda operators are also optimistic that the shades will spark further opportunities for growth. With formal structures in place, riders see potential for setting up small kiosks, mobile money services, and spare part businesses around the shades, creating additional income streams for the youth.
The initiative also strengthens the bond between boda boda operators and the wider community. Residents view the project as a sign that the county government recognizes the contribution of the informal transport sector to Kiambu's economy.
To the riders, these shades represent more than physical structures, they symbolize inclusion, respect, and empowerment. As the project rolls out across Kiambu, many riders are hopeful it will expand to cover all major centers, ensuring that no operator is left behind.
