Post: Bukhungu, Masinde Muliro Stadiums to Host AFCON 2027

Kakamega: Construction works at Bukhungu stadium in Kakamega County is on track in readiness for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027. Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Salim Mvurya has also confirmed that Masinde Muliro stadium in Kanduyi sub-county in Bungoma are undergoing final touches, with the two expected to be venues for the AFCON 2027 football extravaganza.

According to Kenya News Agency, Mvurya, speaking during a tour of Bukhungu stadium’s construction site, was accompanied by Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa. He stated that the government was satisfied with the construction progress to ensure the facility meets the required international standards. Mvurya mentioned that apart from Bukhungu, Kanduyi stadium in Bungoma is 90% complete and they are currently fitting 10,000 seats.

Mvurya noted there will be periodic reviews of the Bukhungu stadium to ensure its completion by June 2027 as directed by President William Ruto during his tour of the facility last January. He emphasized that these are some of the flagship projects in the region and key to talent development.

Governor Barasa expressed confidence in the progress of the stadium’s construction, assuring sports stakeholders that all necessary measures are being taken to meet the stringent requirements for hosting the tournament. He highlighted that the facility would play a pivotal role in enhancing sports and talent development in the region.

Present at the event were PS State department for Sports Peter Tum and officials from Sport Kenya.
