Post: Bungoma County Residents Urged to Protect Electricity Infrastructure

Bungoma: Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi is urging residents of Bungoma County to protect installed electricity equipment from vandalism. The CS emphasized the importance of safeguarding power installations, which have been targeted by individuals cutting wires and vandalizing transformers for the allegedly valuable oil, thus disrupting electricity supply in the region.

According to Kenya News Agency, during the launch of the Rural Electrical connectivity project at Sikalame in Bungoma South Sub-County, Mr. Wandayi highlighted the financial losses incurred by the government due to these acts of vandalism. He encouraged residents to remain vigilant and protect the electricity installations. The CS also warned locals to be cautious of imposters posing as government officials and demanding fees for electricity connections, clarifying that the rural electricity program is fully funded by the government.

The government has allocated Sh1.8 billion for Bungoma County's rural electrification program this financial year. Mr. Wandayi announced the commencement of electricity installation for 300 homes in Sikalame ward and 200 in Musikoma ward, both in Kanduyi constituency. He reiterated the government's commitment to equitable growth and noted the significance of a reliable electricity supply for the country's economic progress.

Bungoma Deputy Governor Janepher Mbatianyi remarked that the electrification program, managed by the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation, will significantly impact the community by fostering small enterprise development. She noted that improved energy supply would enhance the quality of services in rural health facilities.

Community members expressed their appreciation for the electricity installations, highlighting the positive changes in their lives. Residents have started engaging in various enterprises such as barber shops, welding, and operating electrical posho mills, in addition to enjoying better lighting in their homes. Moses Wekesi, a local resident, also noted improved security in the area.

The event saw attendance from prominent figures including Kanduyi Member of Parliament John Makali and Sirisia MP John Waluke.
