Busia: Busia Commissioner Mwachaunga Chaunga has assured county residents of their security amid an increase in armed robbery incidents at Bumala Market. Speaking to a section of boda boda operators in Bumala town, Chaunga said the County and Butula Sub-County security team have come up with a mechanism that will help to restore security in the area.
According to Kenya News Agency, the agreement includes increasing police patrols and coordinating with residents to ensure security through information relay. He also acknowledged the lack of enough police personnel, where he promised that they are going to increase the number of officers in the area. The county commissioner disclosed that two police officers were arrested for inappropriate gun use in Bumala, resulting in two people being shot Saturday. However, the two officers have been arrested, even as investigations continue to determine the circumstances behind the shooting.
Moreover, on the same day of the attack, two people were injured in a bar attack in Bumala. 'It is the responsibility of government to ensure that the security of its citizens and their properties is guaranteed. We are working tirelessly to ensure that such incidents do not happen again. My appeal to the residents is that we should work together to curb those who are causing these incidences,' said the county commissioner.
Meanwhile, residents who attended the meeting led by Bumala boda boda chairman Denis Juma complained of the slow response from the security officers whenever there is an incident at the market. 'The recent incident could have been avoided with a timely response from security officers, highlighting a lack of cooperation between officers and locals. The need for bridged communication is urged,' he said.
The residents also asked for the transfer of officers who have stayed at the stations for a long period, stating that some of them are colluding with criminals to carry out the activities. They assured the security team of their willingness to work with the security agencies through providing information that will help in ensuring there is security in the area. 'We are very determined and willing to work together with the security apparatus by providing any vital information that we get as long as our confidentiality is assured,' said Philemon Otendo, a local resident.
