Post: CAK Chairman Urges Responsible Social Media Use to Protect Kenya’s Image

Nairobi: The Chairman, Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK), Charles Karondo, has called on citizens to exercise responsible social media use, stressing that careless online behavior can harm Kenya's image and economic prospects.

According to Kenya News Agency, Karondo spoke during an economic empowerment forum convened by Murang'a Women Representative, Betty Maina, in Githuri Kiharu constituency. He highlighted the power of digital platforms in shaping perceptions both locally and internationally. 'As young people, we all have smartphones, but we must use them responsibly to promote our culture and national values, locally and internationally,' he noted.

He added that minor incidents, such as a small fire in Murang'a, can be exaggerated online, severely tarnishing the county's image and deterring potential investors. 'Social media is a powerful tool, and we must use it to connect, network, and even earn a living instead of inciting unrest,' Karondo stated.

Karondo further elaborated on the potential of social media as a platform for entrepreneurship, education, and cultural promotion if used wisely. He encouraged youths to explore innovative ways to leverage online platforms for personal and community growth, emphasizing the importance of focusing on solutions rather than problems.

Karondo's remarks are timely, with social media increasingly blamed for spreading misinformation, fueling conflicts, and negatively impacting the country's reputation abroad. The county woman representative, Betty Maina, highlighted the importance of unity and economic recovery in the country, urging leaders and citizens to prioritize community and economic building over divisive online politics.

Kangema MP, Peter Kihungi, echoed these sentiments, warning against political maneuvering aimed at dividing the country, which could have serious consequences for peace and development. He urged political leaders to refrain from stoking tensions or inciting violence and to use social media for constructive dialogue and sharing positive stories about Kenya.

The leaders underscored that every politician has the right to form their own political party and seek voter support, ensuring fair representation for the Mt. Kenya community and allowing them to claim their share of the national political space.
