Post: Cameroon Cocoa farmers may face pricing dilemma

Cocoa farmers in Cameroon may soon decide whether to accept a new offer from an international company. The company has expressed interest in purchasing cocoa at FCFA 5200 per kilogram, which could significantly boost the local economy, the Minister of Trade and Commerce, Luc Magloire said.

However, in some places, this price is lower than what farmers have been receiving in recent months, with cocoa selling for over FCFA 6000 per kilogram. Many farmers are concerned that accepting the lower price could negatively impact their livelihoods. Farmers along the Nigeria-Cameroon border in Manyu Division have their clients who come from Nigeria and buy higher.

But others have welcomed the deal, saying that recently they have been selling cocoa between FCFA 300-4000.

The Minister of Trade and Commerce, Luc Magloire Atangana, has urged farmers to consider the long-term benefits of the deal and to streamline their production processes to improve efficiency and competitiveness.

The outcome of this situation will li
kely depend on the ability of farmers to negotiate favorable terms and the overall market conditions for cocoa in Cameroon.
