Post: CDA Earns Top Honors for Youth Empowerment and Climate Initiatives at Mombasa ASK Show

Mombasa: The Coast Development Authority (CDA) has been awarded first place in Youth Activities, Empowerment, and Capacity Building at the recent Mombasa International Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) Show, highlighting the Authority's efforts in promoting climate-smart agriculture and trade in the coastal region.

According to Kenya News Agency, CDA Acting Managing Director Dr. Mwanasiti Bendera emphasized the Authority's focus on drought mitigation projects, crucial for the 70 percent of the coastal region classified as arid and semi-arid. Dr. Bendera mentioned the establishment of strategic water facilities, including water dams and boreholes, to improve access to clean water for domestic use and livestock in rural areas.

CDA's initiatives extend beyond water projects in areas like Lamu, Wasini, Taita, Kwale, and Kilifi, with a strong emphasis on promoting the blue economy. The Authority has received funding for marine conservation efforts, focusing on sea grass and mangrove rehabilitation, while empowering youths and women in ecosystem conservation.

Dr. Bendera also indicated that CDA is pursuing three proposals for resource mobilization and funding, targeting value addition in fishing, infrastructure development, and boat building. The Authority's collaborative efforts with institutions and NGOs, such as Generation Kenya and the European Union, aim to empower communities through training and business programs.

Furthermore, small-scale irrigation projects, including the Chala water source development program, have contributed to increased agricultural yields, with farmers reportedly boosting production from 16 to 30 bags per acre. Dr. Bendera urged more institutions to partner with CDA in advancing food security, resource management, and sustainable community empowerment in the coastal region.
