Post: Children with Disabilities in Kisii Get Mobility Boost

Kisii: Kisii County has partnered with Walkabout Foundation to distribute 100 wheelchairs to children with mobility challenges. The event, held at Gusii Stadium, brought together children with cerebral palsy, spinal bifida, and other neuromuscular disorders plus their caregivers and community health volunteers from all nine Sub-counties.According to Kenya News Agency, the Foundation's Wheelchair Centre Manager, Carol Mureithi, stated that the goal of the initiative is to create lasting change through access and awareness. "This partnership is not just about mobility devices; it is meant to restore freedom and dignity. Each chair is assembled with precision to ensure the child's safety and comfort in their daily environment," explained Mureithi.The parents and caregivers who attended the event noted the wheelchairs will be life-changing. Sheba Kwamboka, a mother of a nine-year-old boy from Magena, said her son has never attended school due to mobility challenges. "Carrying him everywhere had left us exhaus ted, but now he will be able to move independently," she said.Peter Nyabuto from Marani also expressed his gratitude to the Foundation in partnership with the County for the initiative. "My daughter has been missing clinic appointments because we could not manage the travel expenses. After receiving this wheelchair, it means that she can finally resume therapy and it gives us hope," noted Nyabuto.This marks the fourth time Walkabout Foundation has collaborated with Kisii County on such an initiative. With this distribution, the total number of wheelchairs donated in the region rises to 306, all locally assembled and compliant with the World Health Organisation (WHO) standards.Walkabout Foundation's Kenya operations are coordinated from their hub in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, where wheelchairs are built to withstand rural terrain and repaired locally, ensuring sustainability beyond the donation day.
