Post: Climate Resilience Programme to Employ Over 111,000 Youth Nationwide

Nairobi: The Government has announced the launch of the Climate Resilience Service Program (CRSP), a nationwide initiative designed to provide employment to over 111,000 young people across all 47 counties. This programme aims to address youth unemployment by engaging them in meaningful public works related to infrastructure, environment, housing, and urban development.

According to Kenya News Agency, President William Ruto unveiled the CRSP during the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations in Homabay County. The program is expected to deliver daily wages to unemployed youth, fostering economic empowerment while contributing to national development. The initiative will involve sustainable public works, such as routine road maintenance, seedling production, tree-growing activities coordinated by the Kenya Forest Service, and general urban cleaning services.

Western Regional Commissioner Irungu Macharia, speaking at a stakeholder and citizen engagement forum at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology in Kakamega town, outlined the program's structure. The initiative will run for six months and will employ a cohort system, with each cohort working for 10 consecutive days, allowing more youth to participate. County Implementation Committees have been set up to oversee the recruitment process.

In the Western region, the counties of Kakamega, Bungoma, Vihiga, and Busia will collectively recruit 5,708 youth. Kakamega County is set to receive the largest allocation, with 1,969 workers and 66 supervisors. The recruitment process will be conducted through an online portal, and applicants must be aged between 18-35 years, residing in their local community. Special provisions ensure that 30% of the jobs are reserved for Persons with Disabilities, and gender parity will be maintained.

Mr. Macharia warned against potential fraud, advising applicants to use only the official digital application portal. Preference for supervisory roles will be given to National Youth Service recruits, drawing on their experience in discipline and leadership. The CRSP represents a significant step towards addressing youth unemployment and enhancing climate resilience nationwide.
