Vihiga: Vihiga County has established a County Climate Change Planning Committee (CCCPC) in accordance with Section 16 of the Vihiga County Climate Change Act, 2025. The team appointed by the County Executive Committee Member in charge of Climate Change, Dr. Richard Boiyo, brings together key departmental directors to guide the county's climate agenda.
According to Kenya News Agency, the Committee will be chaired by the Chief Officer responsible for Climate Change matters, while the Director of Climate Change will serve as the Secretary. Its membership includes County Directors in charge of Disaster Management, Agriculture, Environment, Public Health, Lands, Water, Gender and Social Services, Finance, and Meteorology, alongside the County Director of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). Additionally, a representative from a registered public benefit organisation working on climate change in the county, nominated through the Vihiga Civil Society umbrella body, is also joining the committee.
Pursuant to Section 19 of the Act, the newly inaugurated team successfully concluded a two-day induction and inaugural meeting aimed at equipping members with the capacity to discharge their mandate. The sessions introduced the committee to climate change concepts and the County Climate Change Fund mechanism, reviewed milestones achieved under the Vihiga Climate Change Action Plan 2023-2027, and facilitated the presentation and approval of the Financial Year 2024/2025 annual report.
Members also reviewed, refined, and adopted the Vihiga Climate Change Work Plan 2025/2026 in readiness for submission to the County Climate Change Steering Committee chaired by Governor Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo. The CCCPC is expected to play a pivotal role in coordinating climate interventions, resource mobilisation, and policy alignment to strengthen resilience and sustainable development across Vihiga County.
