Uasin gishu: Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has called on county governments to prioritize procuring drugs from the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA), highlighting the significant reforms the Authority has undergone.
According to Kenya News Agency, Duale emphasized that the challenges KEMSA previously faced, including delivery delays, have been addressed. The Authority now ensures 'Last mile delivery of medical supplies up to the grassroots, compared to other agencies.' Duale's remarks came during an event where he joined Uasin Gishu Governor Dr. Jonathan Chelilim to flag off a Sh34 million drug consignment supplied by the Mission for Essential Drugs and Supplies (MEDS). The supplies, intended for 140 health facilities across Uasin Gishu's six sub-counties, support quality healthcare in line with Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
During his speech, the CS highlighted the benefits of the Strategic Health Agenda (SHA) and announced plans to upgrade Ziwa Level 4 hospital to Level 5 to alleviate pressure on the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH). He also mentioned the county's upcoming receipt of advanced medical equipment under the National Equipment Service Programme (NESP).
Governor Chelilim had earlier expressed concerns regarding KEMSA's occasional delays and partial deliveries, despite timely payments by the county. These issues have contributed to drug shortages and prolonged patient suffering in various health facilities.
The CS's county tour included officiating several activities, such as the KMTC Sports grand finale and the commissioning of the KMTC Burnt Forest campus. The event was attended by notable figures, including Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea, Senator Jackson Mandago, MP Samuel Chepkonga (Ainabkoi), PS Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni, and KMTC Chair Josiah Kiplangat, along with CEO Dr. Kelly Oluoch.
