Post: Curfew Enforced in Response to Ethnic Clashes on Nakuru-Narok Border

Nakuru: Authorities have imposed a seven-day dusk-to-dawn curfew in Tipis and Mwisho wa Lami areas along the Nakuru-Narok border after fresh ethnic clashes left one person dead, eight injured, and at least 12 houses destroyed. The violence, which broke out on Saturday night, forced dozens of families to flee after armed attackers torched homes and property. Residents recounted harrowing scenes as chaos engulfed the settlements.

According to Kenya News Agency, the unrest has displaced several families, with eyewitnesses describing the fear and devastation experienced during the attacks. 'We have lost peace. Some of us are now homeless after our houses were burnt down. They just stormed in and started fighting,' said Martha Wanjiru, a resident of Tipis. Simon Mwangi, another victim, claimed that over 200 people invaded the area, forcing many to seek refuge in nearby villages. By Sunday morning, tension remained high as residents barricaded sections of the Nakuru-Narok road at Mwisho wa Lami, demanding swift government action.

Moses Masai, who was injured in the clashes, expressed the urgent need to relocate with his family after being attacked at night. In response, the government deployed heavy security to restore order and convened a high-level meeting at Tipis Centre, bringing together administrators and police commanders from both counties.

Narok County Commissioner Kipketch Lotiatia explained that the clashes were triggered by a dispute over electricity connections, which quickly escalated into road blockades and open conflict. 'The situation got out of hand after residents disagreed over electricity distribution. We are working to ensure calm returns to the area,' he stated.

Nakuru County Commissioner Loyford Kibaara confirmed that patrols had been reinforced and a temporary police post would be set up. 'We are leaving officers on the ground for one week. During curfew hours, no movement will be allowed between Nakuru and Narok,' Kibaara said. The curfew will remain in force until security stabilizes. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement officers as peace-building measures continue.
