Post: Diani Airport Modernization Nears Completion with 97 Percent Progress

Kwale: The over Sh173 million Diani Airport expansion project in Kwale County is on track and nearly complete, with 97 percent of the work finished. The airport, which provides domestic aviation services to the coastal region, is undergoing an expansion to enhance its ability to accommodate larger aircraft, boost tourism, and stimulate the local economy.

According to Kenya News Agency, Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Coast Regional Manager, Eng. Wellington Abwok, highlighted the progress, noting that the construction of the runway, taxi lanes, apron, and watchtower at the airport is almost complete. The runway has been extended from 200 meters to 1,400 meters to support wide-bodied aircraft. Cementers Ltd, with 50 years of experience, is the main contractor and assures that the remaining work will be finished in two weeks.

Eng. Abwok emphasized that the upgrades, including new apron pavements, runways, and taxiways, aim to enhance the airport's infrastructure and operational capacity. Additional developments include a new fire station and relocation of the Air Traffic Control Tower. The expansion initiative seeks to accommodate growing passenger traffic, bolster airport facilities, and reinforce its role as a key regional aviation hub.

Diani Airport Manager Bernadine Mundui and Cementers Ltd representative, Eng. Steve Olunga, noted the airport's increase in passenger traffic, particularly during peak tourist seasons. The project is expected to ease traffic, support local businesses, and promote economic development, turning Kwale County into a pivotal hub for trade and tourism.

The National Government Development-County Implementation, Coordination and Management Committee (NGD-CICMC), led by Kwale County Commissioner Stephen Orinde, visited the airport to ensure alignment with expansion plans. Orinde stated that the project is transformative, creating jobs and promising to uplift sectors such as tourism and local trade. The improved accessibility is anticipated to drive economic growth and transform Kwale into a vibrant coastal economy.

Meanwhile, Eng. Abwok announced that KAA will soon operationalize the Ikanga Airstrip in Voi, Taita Taveta County, after rehabilitation funded by Sh8 million. The airstrip, which had been dormant since 2015, awaits its inaugural flight. Improved air connectivity is expected to benefit Taita Taveta's economy, providing access for tourists and facilitating business logistics.

Eng. Abwok noted that the rehabilitation of the Ikanga Airstrip includes updating aging infrastructure, such as runways and terminals, to enhance operational efficiency and safety. The operationalization of the airstrip is expected to unlock Taita Taveta's tourism potential and attract investors, benefiting from the region's natural resources and attractions.
