Mbale: The Children with Disability Support Organization (CWDSO) held an Autism Awareness Day event at its offices in Mbale, Vihiga County, aiming to increase public awareness about children living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The event, themed 'Advancing Neurodiversity,' gathered parents, caregivers, educators, and disability advocates to express solidarity and support.
According to Kenya News Agency, autism is a complex condition affecting millions worldwide, not only as a medical diagnosis but as a part of human diversity. Judith Olimba, Chief Executive Officer for CWDSO, highlighted the symbolic meaning of colors in autism awareness, explaining how different colors represent various aspects of the autism spectrum and its community. She noted that blue symbolizes the need for calm, red stands for energy, reflecting the hyperactivity of some autistic children, and yellow represents positivity and hope for affected children and their families. These symbols serve as visual reminders, promoting awareness and fostering a sense of community.
Naomi Mandela, chairperson of CWDSO, stressed the event's significance in creating public awareness to eliminate stigma and build an informed, supportive society. She remarked on the prevalence of stigma and misinformation, emphasizing the need for continued awareness to support children with autism and their families.
Caroline Kisuge, a special needs teacher and founder of the Jonathan Ray of Hope NGO Neurodiversity Centre for children with autism, urged parents to engage their children in learning and play activities that promote growth and interaction. Kisuge advocated for activities such as schooling, nature walks, and playground visits to stimulate development and recommended simple home-based therapies like blowing balloons to strengthen mouth muscles and improve speech.
Timon Nabwero, a guardian to a child living with autism, advised parents on the importance of recognizing early signs of autism. He stated that early diagnosis allows for timely intervention, which can significantly enhance a child's development and long-term outcomes, leading to improvements in social skills, communication, and overall functioning.
