Post: Drug Test Kits from UNODC to Strengthen NACADA’s Anti-drug Campaign

Nairobi: NACADA has received a significant donation of 30 Drug Test Kits and 30 Precursor Test Kits from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Nairobi Office. This donation is seen as a major boost to Kenya's efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking.

According to Kenya News Agency, each kit can perform up to 500 tests, providing a vital resource for the enforcement and laboratory teams working to combat drug-related crime nationwide. During the handover ceremony in Nairobi, NACADA CEO Dr. Anthony Omerikwa hailed the donation, calling it a timely boost for Kenya's counter-narcotics efforts. 'This donation significantly enhances Kenya's efforts against drug and substance abuse as these kits will enable NACADA and its partner agencies to quickly and accurately detect narcotics and precursor chemicals on-site. This capability will strengthen intelligence-led enforcement and help them target traffickers and suppliers who endanger the nation's youth,' stated Dr. Omerikwa.

He went on to say that the kits would spearhead enforcement operations and public health and prevention programs. The CEO also noted that early detection allows for early intervention, which can disrupt supply chains at the source ultimately saving lives and protecting the future of Kenyan youth.

During the ceremony, Boniface Wilunda, representing the UNODC's Nairobi Office, presented the kits and reaffirmed the organization's commitment to helping Kenya combat drug trafficking and abuse. 'These drug and precursor testing kits are dependable, portable and scientifically validated and will enable NACADA and other agencies to act swiftly and with conviction when identifying substances, which will in turn reinforce Kenya's ability to maintain the law and safeguard its population,' stated Wilunda.

The donation comes at a time when Kenya, led by the Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, is escalating its 100-Day Rapid Results Initiative to combat illicit alcohol and drugs. The new UNODC kits support the goals of the recently launched National Alcohol Policy 2025, which focuses on stronger enforcement, evidence-based interventions and international cooperation. With these new resources, NACADA and its partners have renewed their commitment to protecting Kenyan communities from the devastating effects of drugs and other illicit substances.
