Nairobi: Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for his comments suggesting that President William Ruto 'met' with Al Shabaab terrorists during a recent tour of the northeastern region earlier this month.
According to Kenya News Agency, Duale, who made his remarks following the conclusion of a three-day medical camp in Balambala Sub County in Garissa, emphasized that President Ruto has accomplished more for the northeastern region than any previous leader. He affirmed that the pastoral communities are fully supportive of the President. Duale accused the former Deputy President and his opposition team of inciting tribalism and undermining other communities.
Duale declared that the era of entitlement, where one community is considered superior to others, has ended with the new Constitution. He highlighted the role of Governors, Ministers, and County Assemblies in managing resources and stressed the importance of respecting all communities. Duale urged not to insult the Somali and Muslim communities, noting President Ruto's overnight stays in Mandera and Wajir counties, an unprecedented move by a sitting president.
Duale's comments came in response to Gachagua's recent statements during a visit to the United States, where he accused President Ruto of 'giving IDs to non-Kenyans' after easing identification requirements for border communities. Gachagua also alleged that President Ruto met with senior Al-Shabaab militants during his Mandera visit, claims that have been condemned by high-ranking government officials, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen.
ODM nominated MP Umulkheir Harun also responded to the issue, suggesting that some opposition leaders oppose equitable distribution of national resources and are perpetuating stereotypes against communities where President Ruto has initiated development projects. Harun acknowledged not voting for Ruto in the last elections but expressed willingness to work with him, citing the President's commitment to inclusivity and the importance of all citizens.
