Egypt: WHO certifies historic eradication of malaria

WHO has announced the eradication of malaria in Egypt, calling the achievement “truly historic.” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus hailed the country’s commitment, stressing that the victory marks the end of a millennia-old scourge.

Egypt achieved this result through intensive vector control, prevention and awareness campaigns.

To achieve this certification, a country must prove that it has been free of malaria transmission for at least three years. To date, 44 countries have been certified as malaria-free.
