Eldoret: The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and founder of EldoHub, Magdaline Chepkemoi, has emphasized the importance of empowering girls through technology and leadership. Speaking to a diverse audience of students, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders during the International Girl Child Day 2025 celebrations in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu, she urged collective support for girls in technology and leadership development.
According to Kenya News Agency, Chepkemoi, a computer scientist renowned for her contributions to the digital economy and youth and women empowerment in Kenya, and a recipient of the Head of State Commendation (HSC) in 2023, insisted that with the right support, girls can excel in any academic field. Sharing her personal journey, she recounted, "I loved math and science, but my family didn't believe computer science was for girls. They wanted me to be a nurse or a teacher." Despite these challenges, she pursued her passion, graduating with first-class honors in computer science.
Her organization, EldoHub, is dedicated to equipping young people and women with digital skills. A key initiative, the EldoHub Tech Academy, focuses on teaching skills such as coding, teamwork, and communication. "We want girls to be ready for jobs and even start their own businesses," Chepkemoi explained. The academy also provides mentorship and business coaching to support youth in achieving success.
Highlighting the historical contributions of women in technology, Chepkemoi cited figures like Ada Lovelace, the first computer programmer, and Grace Hopper, who contributed to the development of the first all-electronic digital computer. "Girls should know these stories and believe in themselves," she emphasized.
Chepkemoi also addressed online safety, urging parents to guide their children in navigating online spaces safely. "Children face many dangers online. Parents must teach them not to share private information or talk to strangers," she advised.
Advocating for the education of all girls, including those with disabilities, Chepkemoi stated, "Every girl should be in school. If she can't afford fees, we must help. Girls should also be encouraged to lead." She called for joint efforts from public and private sectors to address issues like teenage pregnancy, ensuring girls can thrive.
The EldoHub CEO expressed optimism for the future, asserting that with education, technology, and respect, girls and boys can collaboratively shape a better tomorrow.
