Establish Nyandarua University underway

Preparations for the establishment of Nyandarua University, a constituent college under the mentorship of the University of Nairobi, is nearing completion, with the institution’s facilities undergoing a major facelift in readiness for its official opening.

The institution will be located at the current Ol-Joro Orok Agricultural Training Centre (ATC). The plans are at an advanced stage to actualise the dream of having a Public University in the County.

According to Governor Kiarie Badilisha, the County Administration has pumped sh 50 million to renovate the buildings and other infrastructure that the AHITI Nyahururu was initially using before it was relocated to its current location.

At the institution, there are lecture halls, dining halls, a well-equipped library, and the administration block, among other facilities.

The governor, who was accompanied by the County Assembly Committee on Education, assured of his government’s unwavering commitment to seeing the long-delayed dream come true.

‘We have comm
itted resources towards creating the necessary infrastructure for the university’s commencement, and the long-term objective is to have the facility at the Captain Trading Centre put to use and hopefully establish satellite campuses in other sub-counties. This is a dream that will be realised,’ said Badilisha.

His sentiments were echoed by Nyandarua County Assembly Speaker Wachira Waiganjo and a host of other local leaders, who said the establishment of the university will not only come in to boost education performance in the region but will also play a key role in spurring economic growth among communities around.

The University of Nairobi has committed to nurturing the constituent college into a fully-fledged university.

Already, Governor Badilisha has held successful deliberations with stakeholders drawn from the education ministry and the Commission for University Education, as well as with local MPs, on fast-tracking this process.
