Post: Freedom fighters want to build a museum to remember the freedom fighters

The Mau Mau Original Trust in Narok County wants the County Government of Narok to allow them build a museum at the site where the Briton colonizers are believed to have buried alive the freedom fighters in the colonial era.Led by their chairman Daniel Kamau, the fighters said the trauma that their forefathers underwent in a bid to gain independence should not be washed away but should be preserved and passed on to future generations.Near the shrines, Kamau said, was a building that acted as a holding ground for the freedom fighters dubbed 'Jela ndogo', where they want to erect a monument for remembrance.'How will our children appreciate where we have come from if there is nothing to show. We plead with the county government to allow us preserve that area as an iconic area for future generations,' he said. The site that borders the Narok Law court, along the Narok-Nakuru Highway has a building built by the white man during the colonial era.Kamau pleaded with the county government to allow them build the museum in that specific grounds saying if they are moved to another ground, the museum will not be relevant.'We don't want another ground, this is the ground we want because this is where our forefathers were buried so that we can have a place to celebrate them every year,' he said.He spoke after holding a meeting with the trust members at the Narok Youth Empowerment Hall where he said the trust is still pushing for compensation from the British government for all Kenyans for the torture inflicted on them during the colonial period.Lekuta Ole Tombo said the best way to honour the freedom fighters and pass the information to the next generations is by building a museum at the shrines.Another trust member, Mama Teressia Wairimu called on the county government to allow them build a monument in the area so that the whole country can appreciate that there were freedom fighters in Narok county.'We do not want to leave this world before we see something being built in that site that will educate our ge neration on where we have come from. My husband is among those who were buried in that site and to date am very bitter about it,' she said.Source: Kenya News Agency
