Nyeri: The Department of Medical Services and Public Health, Nyeri County, was honoured to receive a generous donation from the Safaricom PLC Foundation through the Pamoja Initiative for uplifting Gatiko Dispensary in Mathira West Sub-County, Nyeri County.
According to Kenya News Agency, the donation, valued at Sh1.5 million, includes maternity couches, a delivery bed, laboratory machines, OPD benches, and other essential medical equipment. Health Facility Management Committee (HFMC) Chairman, Mr. John Koigi, expressed his gratitude to the Safaricom Foundation for uplifting Gatiko Dispensary, making it the first well-equipped dispensary in both Mathira East and West Sub-Counties. 'This contribution will have a significant impact on the residents of Mathira West Sub-County, particularly in Gatiko,' said Koigi.
Speaking when receiving the equipment today on behalf of the Department, Mr. Alexander Mbutu, the Medical Officer of Health for Mathira East and West Sub-Counties, extended his heartfelt appreciation and emphasized the importance of Social Health Authority (SHA) registration for the community members, highlighting its role in ensuring accessible and affordable health care services. He urged community members to utilise the facility, emphasising that continued use could lead to its elevation to a health centre in the future. Mbutu said, 'Your kindness and support are not just contributions; they are life-changing gifts that make a lasting impact on our healthcare services and the lives of countless patients.'
Bonface Mwangi, Manager of Access Transport and Rollout at Safaricom PLC, highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in community development. He acknowledged that modern medical equipment is crucial for efficient healthcare services, which is why the foundation has revamped its Health Pillar under the 2023-2026 Strategy. This initiative aims to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates. He also commended the facility's management team, led by HFMC Chairman John Koigi and the facility in charge, for their dedication. He expressed hope that the donated equipment would be well-maintained to ensure it served its intended purpose effectively. 'This generous contribution from the Safaricom Foundation marks a significant milestone in enhancing healthcare services in Mathira West, ensuring better medical support for the local community,' said Koigi Health Facility Chairman.
