Post: Government Allocates Sh2.1 Billion for Electricity Supply in Kakamega County

Kakamega: Over 33,500 households in Kakamega county are set to receive electricity under the government's Last Mile connectivity program, with a total investment of Sh2.1 billion. Principal Secretary, State Department for Energy, Alex Wachira, announced the initiative at Sale village in Mautuma location, Lugari Constituency, stating that it will improve lives and boost businesses across the county, thus promoting economic growth.

According to Kenya News Agency, Wachira emphasized that Kakamega county has been allocated Sh2.1 billion, aiming to connect 33,507 households to the national electricity grid by December this year. Specifically, Lugari Constituency has been allocated Sh194 million to connect over 6,000 households. Lugari lawmaker Nabii Nabwera praised the government for the electrification program, highlighting its potential to transform the socio-economic conditions of many constituents who have lived without electricity since independence. He urged the government to ensure all residents benefit from the program to prevent perceptions of marginalization.

Nabwera also requested an additional power line to serve constituents living across the railway line, citing challenges in connecting areas such as Kilulu, Munyuki, and Mapengo. He criticized the contractor handling the Last Mile project in Malaika area for delays, noting the community's eagerness to access electricity.

Lugari Deputy County Commissioner, Linet Orina, expressed gratitude for the Last Mile initiative, noting its positive impact on security. She stated that new power connections will enhance security, facilitate small businesses, and help learners study more effectively. However, she called for more funds to connect additional households to the national grid in the future.

Members of County Assembly, including Pius Balex (Chevaywa), Titus Kwoma (Chekalini), and Niver Oluchiri (Nominated), thanked the government for the project and pledged support for President William Ruto's re-election in 2027. They emphasized the constituency's significant benefits from national government projects, despite the area's legislator belonging to the Orange Democratic Movement party.

Beneficiaries from Sale area, Malaika area, and Mbajo area appreciated the efforts of their Member of Parliament and the national government, acknowledging the transformative impact of electrification. Residents like Herman Musule from Malaika area highlighted the potential for income-generating activities and improved security. Meanwhile, Wycliffe Soita, a youth from the area, noted the opportunities for self-employment and entrepreneurship, such as barber shops and welding businesses, thanks to the newfound electricity access.
