Kwale: The national government of Kenya has allocated Sh3.2 billion in grants to Beach Management Units (BMUs) across 10 counties bordering the Indian Ocean and Lake Victoria, as part of efforts to rejuvenate the country's blue economy sector. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki announced the initiative, emphasizing the government's commitment to unlocking the economic potential of coastal resources while ensuring their long-term sustainability.
According to Kenya News Agency, the blue economy sector, which includes fisheries, maritime biotechnology, aquaculture, tourism, and marine transport and logistics, is receiving significant attention and investment from the government. Kwale County, in particular, has seen substantial developments, including the Sh2.6 billion Shimoni Fish Port project and the establishment of fish landing sites in various fishing villages. These projects aim to bolster economic activity and improve infrastructure in the region.
In addition to these projects, the Deputy President highlighted that the National Mariculture Resource and Training Centre is 40% complete, and the Matuga Campus of the Kenya Coast National Polytechnic is 85% finished. The government is also constructing fresh produce markets and affordable housing in various sub-counties of Kwale, as well as progressing on the Sh13.7 billion Mwache multipurpose Dam and electrification projects to benefit thousands of households.
During a resource mobilization event in Matuga Sub County, hosted by Kwale Woman Representative Fatuma Masito, Prof. Kindiki emphasized the importance of empowering local communities through strategic economic and social initiatives. The event focused on providing financial support, entrepreneurship training, and government-backed opportunities to women and youth, aiming to uplift small-scale traders, youth groups, women cooperatives, and local artisans.
Governor Achani praised the resource mobilization efforts as a transformative empowerment initiative designed to uplift grassroots entrepreneurs. She reiterated the devolved government's commitment to scaling these initiatives to ensure continued support for women and youth in business. Kwale Woman Rep. Fatuma Masito echoed these sentiments, highlighting the program's role in enhancing self-reliance and stimulating local economic activity.
The forum was well-attended by several Members of Parliament, reflecting a broad support base for the government's initiatives aimed at transforming rural economies and ensuring inclusive national development.
