Post: Government Emphasizes Research-Focused Funding for Universities

Chuka: The government has reaffirmed its dedication to bolstering university education through research, innovation, and strategic partnerships, highlighting the importance of this approach in sustaining institutions under the newly implemented higher education funding model. This commitment was articulated by Secretary for Higher Education and Research, Dr. Caroline Hunja, during Chuka University's 14th Graduation Ceremony. Dr. Hunja, representing the Principal Secretary for Higher Education, emphasized the need for universities to expand their resource base by leveraging competitive research grants, digital technologies, and global collaborations.

According to Kenya News Agency, Dr. Hunja noted that institutions embracing research and innovation are better positioned to drive national development priorities, which include digital transformation, job creation, and community empowerment. Vice Chancellor of Chuka University, Prof. Henry Mutembei, echoed these sentiments by highlighting the university's success in strengthening its research footprint, having secured over Sh380 million in research funding this year. Prof. Mutembei praised the academic staff for their ability to secure competitive grants from reputable organizations at national, regional, and global levels.

Prof. Mutembei also emphasized the university's alignment with the government's new funding model and its collaboration with industry partners to enhance training, innovation, and employability. He underscored the role of the Centre for Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence in equipping graduates with essential digital skills and discussed the impact of the University's Kairini demonstration farm in supporting farmers' training, environmental conservation, and community outreach.

Igambang'ombe MP Patrick Munene, who attended the ceremony, commended the university for its significant contribution to regional and national development. He advocated for continued support for programs that equip youth with market-ready competencies.
