Tiaty: The Ministry of Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes has stepped up drought relief and development efforts in Baringo County to support vulnerable families and enhance resilience in arid and semi-arid areas. During a visit to Kolowa and Chemolingot in Tiaty Constituency, Cabinet Secretary for Public Service Geoffrey Ruku led a government delegation in distributing essential supplies to households affected by prolonged drought.
According to Kenya News Agency, the emergency intervention was conducted under the State Department for Special Programmes, which is coordinating humanitarian responses across the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) in the country. CS Ruku emphasized the government's commitment to addressing the immediate needs of communities facing food insecurity while laying the groundwork for sustainable development initiatives.
Accompanied by local leaders including Tiaty MP William Kamket, Baringo County Woman Representative Jematiah Sergon, and Kacheliba MP Titus Lotee, CS Ruku received praise for the initiative and calls for sustained government efforts to address failed rains and food scarcity in the region. The government has also launched several long-term projects like the Cheraik Irrigation Project and Radat Dam, which aim to improve water access and boost food production.
The Chemeron Dam rehabilitation project is set to supply water to over 10,500 households and more than 150,000 livestock. This comes as part of a broader strategy to improve water access in Baringo, where reliable water sources have been scarce. Under the coordination of the Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA), the government has also commissioned additional water infrastructure projects, including boreholes and earth dams, to benefit thousands of households and livestock.
CS Ruku reiterated the ministry's commitment to citizen-centred programmes aligned with President William Ruto's development agenda, which focuses on food security, human capital development, and social empowerment. He highlighted macroeconomic improvements under the Kenya Kwanza administration, citing a decrease in inflation and a better-performing national currency as indicators of a conducive environment for development.
The visit concluded with assurances from CS Ruku of more targeted programmes in food security, infrastructure, and peace-building to support livelihoods and promote sustainable development in the region. Plans are also underway to operationalise two Huduma Centres in Tiaty Constituency, enhancing access to public services for local residents.
