Post: Government Orders Surrender of Illegal Firearms in Loiyangalani Sub County

Loiyangalani: The government has set a two-week deadline for residents of Loiyangalani sub county in Marsabit county to surrender illegal firearms. Marsabit County Commissioner James Kamau emphasized the need for compliance to avoid a forceful retrieval operation.

According to Kenya News Agency, Commissioner Kamau addressed the issue during a visit to Sarima village, following joint security and peace meetings in Loiyangalani and neighboring Samburu North. He stressed that those unlawfully possessing firearms pose a security threat and hinder development. Kamau urged residents to support government development programs to enhance regional growth.

Accompanied by security officials and peace committee elders, Kamau highlighted measures taken to restore peace, including recruiting 131 police reservists. Plans are underway to increase the number of national police reservists and deploy administration police officers to chiefs’ offices for enhanced security.

Kamau warned that unless illegal firearms in areas like Moite, Ortulot, Sarima, Larachi, and Gas are surrendered, a security operation will be conducted to seize over 250 reported illegal assault rifles. He stated that the government will not tolerate unlicensed firearms and urged those interested in legally owning guns to follow proper application procedures.

Residents expressed support for the government’s efforts to maintain peace, blaming illegal firearms for recent livestock raids. Ms. Nang’ila Ekomwa, chairperson of the local peace committee, affirmed the community’s commitment to peace, highlighting women’s involvement in peace-building initiatives.

Facilitated by World Vision Kenya, the community engagements concluded with a resolution to surrender illegal firearms and promote peaceful coexistence among local pastoralist communities. The County Commissioner instructed local chiefs to facilitate regular intercommunal dialogues to strengthen unity and understanding among residents.
