Post: Government Set to Rename Sabata Secondary School in Memory of Chebukati

Nairobi: The government has announced plans to renovate and rename Sabata Secondary School in Trans Nzoia County in honour of the late former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chair Wafula Chebukati. This follows a request by Kiminini Legislator Kakai Bisau during the burial of the late IEBC Chair on Saturday.

According to Kenya News Agency, the request, which has been granted by President William Ruto, who was in attendance, will see the school get a facelift, where the government will facilitate the construction of 15 modern classrooms. Explaining the need to rename the school in honour of the late former IEBC Chair, Bisau termed the announcement of the 2022 presidential results iconic as it saved the nation from bloodshed.

"Wafula Chebukati was no ordinary Kenyan, and for those who would want to doubt that, they need to walk down memory lane back to the 2022 general election. Where many would be intimidated and compromised, Chebukati stood out with the values of integrity and fear of the law. The announcement of the presidential results summed up the man he was," said the MP, explaining the need to remember him by naming the institution after him.

Besides general renovation works and construction of the 15 classrooms, the school has also been identified as a digital centre of excellence as per the request of the area legislator. "Chebukati was an IT lover and enthusiast. We would want to see a digital centre of excellence being set up at Sabata Secondary," said Bisau.

The digital hub will open up the area to digital opportunities, creating employment for many youth and the locals, as enshrined in the government's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda blueprint.
