Post: Governor Achani Urges Youth to Abandon Crime, Embrace Peace and Economic Opportunities

Kwale: Kwale Governor, Fatuma Achani, has called on the youth in the coastal county to shun crime, as well as drugs and substance abuse, and take advantage of the ongoing county and national government economic empowerment programs. Governor Achani underscored that her administration, together with the national government, is committed to youth economic empowerment.

According to Kenya News Agency, Achani emphasized that equipping young people with essential practical skills remains a priority for her administration. The county recently launched a Sh30 million Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) fund as part of its commitment to strengthening TVET and up-skilling artisans. This initiative is part of an ambitious agenda to reposition technical and vocational education training across the coastal county.

Achani affirmed that the devolved government is determined to equip local youth with the competencies necessary to drive economic growth, create employment, and 'reposition Kwale as a leading hub of skilled labour in the coastal region'. The Governor highlighted her administration's dedication to economic empowerment and poverty reduction through TVET development in enhancing livelihoods and creating economic opportunities.

The coastal county leader cautioned the youth against social vices like drug and substance abuse and criminal activities, warning that the choices they make today would shape their future. She specifically warned against illicit drugs such as cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and methamphetamine, citing their danger and harm to human survival.

Achani, who was accompanied by Msambweni sub-county Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Joseph Mutisya, addressed youth in Diani town who had abandoned crime in favor of peace and productive engagement. Diani and Ukunda townships have previously faced violence from juvenile gangs known as 'Panga Boys' that terrorized residents and tourists. The Governor expressed gratitude to the youth in the sub-county for choosing peace and self-development.

Achani further assured that her administration would continue to prioritize programs and projects offering the youth opportunities for a better life. She pledged to collaborate with stakeholders, parents, and community leaders to ensure safety and peace in Kwale county.

The notorious 'Panga boys' gangs have been infamous for criminal activities, particularly in Msambweni and Matuga. Governor Achani awarded a company certificate to the reformed youth group, enabling them to qualify for tenders and contracts at both county and national levels.

As Kwale's first woman governor, Achani reaffirmed her commitment to advancing women and youth in governance, economic participation, and social development. The county has registered over 300 companies owned by women, youth, and persons with disabilities, with at least 150 companies securing county government tenders. She emphasized that the formation of companies is a strategic approach to tackling unemployment in the county.

Achani encouraged the youth to engage with the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) program, aimed at empowering young people. The NYOTA project addresses youth unemployment through skills training, entrepreneurship support, mentorship, and employment opportunities.

DCC Mutisya also urged the youth to avoid drug abuse and crime, emphasizing the numerous opportunities available through government empowerment programs. He promised zero tolerance for crime in Msambweni and called on stakeholders to collaborate in combating the drug menace in the coastal region. Mutisya reminded parents of their role in ensuring their children grow into responsible citizens.

Community members, led by elder Tsimba Rungu, expressed gratitude for the security sensitization forum, which they believe will help reformed youths become productive members of society.
