Post: Govt Intensifies Intelligence-Led Operations Against Illegal Firearms in Kerio Valley

Chesongoch: Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has reaffirmed the government's commitment to sustaining long-term security gains in the Kerio Valley, promising continued intelligence-led operations and development of security infrastructure. Speaking at St Maurus Primary School grounds in Chesongoch on Friday, Murkomen stressed that the government would not relent in its efforts to eradicate illegal firearms and restore lasting peace in the region.

According to Kenya News Agency, Murkomen reiterated that the era of gun violence in the Kerio Valley was over, insisting that security agencies would not allow communities to slide back into banditry. "We have finished with the issue of fighting with people on issues involving guns," he declared. "We will not go back. We will not allow anyone to return to possessing illegal guns. It does not matter where you are; the government knows you."

He emphasised that intelligence systems have evolved, making it easier for authorities to trace firearm holders. "In the past, the government would ransack people's houses for guns," he said. "But today, there is intelligence. The government knows you, and it knows how many guns there are. If you surrender one, they will tell you to bring the rest, because they know."

The CS revealed that the ongoing disarmament exercise has now moved deeper into Tiaty, where significant progress is being recorded. "So far, Elgeyo Marakwet has surrendered 300 guns, while Tiaty has surrendered 400," he noted, expressing optimism that more illegal firearms would be handed over voluntarily.

Murkomen urged residents to continue cooperating with authorities and assured them that the government will continue investing in long-term development projects that support peace and security. "All guns must be surrendered. This is the only way to ensure our people live in peace and prosperity," he said.
