It was a sat Thursday, January 11, 2024, in Mamfe as a newly recruited Gendarme fired indiscriminate shots at a vehicle, screaming for road settlement ( a bribe given by highway drivers to security forces)
CNA correspondent who spoke with witnesses said that the driver left Mamfe in the South West region and was heading to Bamenda in the North West region.7
When he was stopped at the Okoyong checkpoint, at the Mile 4 roundabout, he told the Gendarmes that he was heading to Bamenda and would be back to settle them.
‘We were at the Okoyong checkpoint, we stooped the car but the driver left and we suddenly saw one young gendarme who started shouting at the driver and we asked him what the problem was but we only heard gunshots and then one person fell.’ A Police officer narrated.
CNA was told that it was not the first time that drivers would tell the security at the checkpoints that they would be back to settle them.
Bernice Tangwa who sells food to the same soldiers around the checkpoint, was hit as she c
rossed the road. She died on the spot.
Residents vowed to teach those at the mixed control a lesson, ‘ They are now saying that they will kill us all here,’ a Policeman who was at the scene said.
