Health workers to strike over poor working conditions

In a release made public on Thursday, September 12, 2024, health workers in Cameroon under their Workers’ Union are planning to go on strike by the end of the month of September.

The disgruntled health workers through their union, plan to go on a general strike in front of the Ministry of Public Health, in Yaounde and in front of regional delegations across the country on September 30, 2024.

Through these actions, the Union of Health Workers intends to make its voice heard until precarious working conditions improve. Following another strike notice issued on July 17, 2024, health personnel note that until this date, no measures have been taken to resolve the problems posed by them to the government.

This concerns the exploitation of 27,000 temporary workers working without salary or social protection, the non-payment of promotions and other benefits linked to staff salaries, disciplinary assignments with incitement to resignation on the part of certain officials of the Ministry of public health, professio
nal discrimination during various recruitments despite the glaring lack of health personnel in our hospitals, the non-transfer of health personnel covered by the labor code to the public service this after more than 10 years of service, the unfair dismissal of staff representatives, interference by the administration in union affairs.

This threat comes a year after another strike

action was organized by the said workers in the nation’s capital to denounce poor working conditions.
