Aldai: Hundreds of residents of Chemuswo and Chebirir wards, Aldai sub county, received free medical care during Beyond Zero medical outreaches, bringing essential health services closer to rural communities.
According to Kenya News Agency, at Chemuswo dispensary grounds, the Beyond Zero mobile clinic was a hive of activity as men, women, and children turned up in large numbers to access services that are often difficult to reach.
The medical camp offered antenatal care (ANC) for expectant mothers, HIV/AIDS testing and counselling, outpatient consultations, nutritional assessments, and psychological counselling. A major highlight was cancer screening, which residents welcomed as a life-saving intervention.
Beyond Zero Clinic County Coordinator, Nancy Chepkirui, noted that the initiative was designed to bridge healthcare access gaps in far-to-reach areas. 'The core aim of the Beyond Zero outreach programs is to take these essential health services directly to the people, especially where hospitals are many kilometers away,' she said, emphasizing the role of preventive care in improving community health.
For residents like Mary Jepchirchir from Chemuswo, the program came as a relief. 'I had been postponing my cancer screening because the nearest hospital is far and transport is expensive,' she said. 'Being screened here at home for free has given me peace of mind. I feel more confident about my health,' she added.
In Chebirir ward, another outreach program drew an equally impressive crowd, with mothers and young children making up the majority of beneficiaries. Services included immunizations against childhood diseases, HIV testing and counselling, malaria prevention education, and nutritional advice.
A young mother, Hellen Chepkemoi, expressed gratitude for the convenience the camp provided. 'I brought my two children for vaccination and also received antenatal care myself. Without this outreach, I would have spent the whole day traveling to Kapsabet hospital. This saved me time and money and my children are now protected,' she said.
Local leaders expressed satisfaction with the strong community turnout, stressing that such initiatives are key to raising health standards in rural areas. Residents praised the program for saving them time and costs associated with traveling long distances to seek medical attention.
Health officials urged residents to take advantage of regular medical camps and maintain routine check-ups to ensure family wellbeing. Plans are underway to roll out similar outreaches in other wards of Aldai Sub county as part of the wider Beyond Zero initiative to promote healthcare equity across the county.
