Nairobi: State Departments in the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy have announced that their performance contract targets for the Financial Year 2025-2026 will be aligned with the commitments made to the public. The alignment aims to ensure that services delivered are efficient and effective, in accordance with constitutional provisions.
According to Kenya News Agency, the Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy, Eng. John Tanui, emphasized the ministry's goal of setting ambitious but achievable targets. He highlighted the importance of fulfilling key promises made to citizens, ensuring that the targets are SMART-Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound. Tanui spoke at the ministry's Performance Contract Vetting for the upcoming financial year, held at the Ministry's Headquarters, Telposta Towers. The event was attended by senior officials, including Secretary Administration for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, Mr. Waweru Kimani.
Eng. Tanui outlined the Ministry's strategic objectives for the financial year, which include contributing to the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) through five key areas. These areas focus on expanding ICT and telecommunications infrastructure for digital inclusivity, promoting ICT and media skills, and improving universal access to information for a knowledge-based society. Additionally, the Ministry aims to strengthen the regulatory framework for broadcasting and telecommunications and promote local digital content to create employment opportunities.
Tanui reassured the Performance Contract vetting team, led by Director of the Public Service Performance Management Unit, Vincent Sutei, of the Ministry's support and collaboration. He expressed confidence in achieving positive results from the vetting process. The State Department for Broadcasting and Telecommunications has committed to finalizing the National Communication Policy, which is expected to guide and stimulate growth in the communication sector and enhance public access to information.
Furthermore, the Ministry plans to upscale the development and connectivity of ICT digital hubs in collaboration with the National Government Constituency Fund. This initiative will involve existing constituency hubs, youth empowerment centers, postal corporation offices, and Huduma centers across the country. The Ministry also seeks to accelerate the implementation of last-mile connectivity, aiming to expand network connectivity for 300 public institutions and commission 200 last-mile sites with network infrastructure.
